How to Visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco
The Moroccan Sahara is more accessible than many travelers realize. This guide explains where to go, how long you need and what a desert experience actually involves so you can plan with confidence.

Where is the Sahara in Morocco?
The most popular Sahara destination is Merzouga, beside the towering Erg Chebbi dunes in the south-east. Zagora is closer to Marrakech but has smaller dunes.
How many days do you need?
From Marrakech, a 3-day / 2-night tour to Merzouga is the most comfortable option. From Fes it can be done in 2–3 days. Rushed one-night trips to Zagora exist but involve a lot of driving.
Camel treks and desert camps
A late-afternoon camel trek into the dunes, a night in a traditional or luxury camp and a sunrise over the sand are the core of the experience.
Best time to visit
October to April offers the most comfortable temperatures. Summer days are extremely hot, so treks are timed for sunrise and sunset.
What to bring
- Warm layers for cold desert nights
- Scarf for sun and sand
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- Closed shoes and sandals
- A small bag for your overnight camp
